OJ and Minority Rights (EXAMPLE!!!)

The victory of Mr. Simpson and his legal team was not only a win for minority rights, but it also helped pave the way for the historic election of Barack Obama as President of the United States! For hundreds of years, African Americans had been mastered under the whips of not just slave owners, but also under the whips of America's legal system. Johnny Cochran, the African-American lawyer who lead OJ's defense, boldly took the reins of a case that was about so much more than murder. At stake was a minority's right to a fair trial. The fact that doubt existed in the prosecution's case, and that the jury did not look past this in what was "The Court Case of a Lifetime", helped ensure the protection of minority rights for generations to come. President Obama's 14th Amendment rights of Due Process and Equal Protection were further enhanced as a result of this case, despite 200 previous years of discrimination, racism, and law-breaking.

  1. Although Mr. Simpson being given his fair trial, may have given other minorities a sense of empowerment, I do not think it helped pave the way for an African American president. I hardly think a criminal should be seen as such a helpful man in history. The circumstances that got Barack Obama elected were far different than the ones involving the Simpson trial and it was also much further in the future. I'm sure at the time this trial seemed like it would be the start if equal rights for everyone, but from what I know there was far more that happened before minorities began getting the rights they deserved.
